Italy - Umbria

Umbria naturally divides into three distinct regions: to the north of the capital, Perugia, the Citta di Castello, Gubbio, and Umbertide area; central Umbria with Perugia, Assisi, and lake Trasimeno; south of Perugia, the Valle Umbra from Spello to Spoleto and, to the west, historic Todi and Etruscan Orvieto.

From Perugia, the main road and a private railway follow the upper Tiber valley into a green landscape of tobacco farms, olive groves, and gently rolling hills, enclosed by forests and mountains – in fact, some of the most under populated parts of Italy. To the west near the border with Tuscany, the walled Renaissance Citta di Castello boasts an impressive Duomo, several palazzos and the works of a contemporary artist, Alberto Burri, housed in the lovely quattrocento Palazzo Alibizzini; to the east, is stern, grey, 2500 year-old Gubbio and, bordering the Marche in the east, a beautiful range of mountains that form one of the many natural parks that this charming, green province is well known for.

High on a hill above the Tiber, Perugia enjoys a reputation as one of Italy's greatest art cities with some of the most authentic medieval streets in all Europe: the magnificent Piazza IV Novembre with the splendid town hall and San Lorenzo cathedral, the Galleria Nazionale, and the elegant pedestrian walkway, Corso Vannucci; the local people are said to match the Florentines for their great elegance and beauty; and there is a very lively nightlife since Perugia is also a vibrant university town.
Directly to the west, the Perugians have a "Riviera" all of their own: an area around the shores of lake Trasimeno; to the east, in view of Perugia's balconies, is world-famous Assisi with cream and pink-coloured facades and the fine basilica with its Giotto frescoes and what is Italy's finest collection of trecento painting.

Well south of Perugia, the Tiber flows below Todi before taking a sharp left towards Orvieto, a city on top of a one thousand foot, sheer-cliff mesa with an amazing Duomo, four churches, and the Palazzo Caravaja. To the east of Todi, between Assisi and Spoleto, lies the magnificent Valle Umbra – a Tuscany look-alike – with Spoleto, an art town known for its festival and magnificent aqueduct.
