Italy - Tuscany - Lucca and Forte dei Marmi
In the 16th century as Lucca really prospered, its nobility and merchants built fine villas with great gardens – there are well over four hundred of them – in the soft rolling countryside to the north and east of the city. Three are open to the public: Villa Mansi, Villa Torrigiani and the more well-known Villa Pecci-Blunt.
The countryside to the north, east, and west of Lucca is largely rich, green agricultural land with fields, olive groves, vineyards, orchards, cypress-dotted hills and low mountains just as Gozzeli and Fra Angelico painted them in the fourteenth century.
There are many villages here – once there were over a thousand – with houses neatly arranged in rows rather than classically around a central piazza.

For guests staying in the Lucca area, apart from historical excursions around the city, there are local activities: wine and olive oil tasting; concerts; cooking school sessions.
Then there are trips to interesting places like Pisa as well as Forte di Marmi and the famous Cinque Terra villages; Siena, Florence, and Chianti are within a sixty to ninety minute-drive; for the sportif, walking in the hills, tennis, horse riding and hot-air ballooning will provide stimulus. Forte dei Marmi is twenty minutes from Lucca: gorgeous boutiques, cafés and beach clubs in the best Italian taste.
Our villa-hotels – luxury, staffed properties with big pools and concierge service – are located close to the charming villages near Lucca and in the heart of Forte dei Marmi.
