Italy - Tuscany - Lucca and Forte dei Marmi
TUSCANY - LUCCA AND FORTE DEI MARMI
Northern Tuscany lies south-east of Luguria and borders on Emilia Romagna province to the east: it comprises the Lunigiana region in the north, the Garfagnana area further south, the chic resort of Forte dei Marmi on the Versilian Riviera to the west and, at its southernmost extreme, the great city of Lucca and historical Pisa.
Lucca was founded in 180 BC, and its Roman origins are evident from its rigid grid of streets and the extraordinary elliptical arena: Caesar came to form the First Triumvirate; by 1200, it was one of the leading trading towns. Capture by Pisa was quickly reversed by Castracani; in 1805, it was given by Napoléon to his sister, Lucca's much loved ruler, and later it became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

The tree-topped ramparts and the green belt are flanked by a splendid double row of massive plane trees that extend for well over four kilometres: rather like going to paradise, entry to Lucca is by the 16th-century Porta san Pietro gates with Lucca's proud motto, Libertas, inscribed above them.
In spite of its immense architectural wealth, Lucca is still a city on a very human scale – one can walk across it in less than half an hour – and it has a magic of its own. An early morning walk in one of the lovely piazzas bathed in yellow-orange sunlight, the pigeons circling above, the colours of fresh vegetables in the market, and a seductive aroma of newly-baked bread and of freshly-ground coffee is sure to endear you to Lucca forever.
