France - The Saint Tropez Peninsula
After the War, the Parisians came back, and Saint Tropez went through its intellectual and existentialist phase: it was favoured by celebrities Jean-Paul Sartre and Juliette Gréco: Saint-Germain-de-Prés had come to the South of France, and Saint Tropez was once again really quite the fashion.
Then, in 1954, Roger Vadim – who had been married to Brigitte Bardot for two years – made the celebrated film And God Created Woman with Curt Jurgens and Bardot in the lead roles: some of the most torrid scenes were filmed on Pampelonne beach – in fact, just where the now much-celebrated Club 55 is located – and "Saint Trop" as we know it, came into being.
This was the defining moment, myths were born, and the trio Bardot-Vadim-Sagan gave Saint Tropez "taste": it became the hedonistic summer destination of choice for the wealthy Parisians: their wives went to the morning markets in the week and, on Friday night, their husbands flew down from the capital to join them and their family for le weekend.
The sixties saw in the marriage of Mick Jagger to Bianca in Saint Tropez, and it became the favoured refuge of show business people as well as the privileged and more wealthy of the world: the exotic beach clubs multiplied, and topless bathing on Pampelonne beach – only after some considerable resistance by the local people – finally became de rigeur.

Just about all the good beaches and the beach clubs are set on the magnificent, four mile-long Pampelonne beach that stretches from Cap du Pinet to Cap Camarat. Unlike on the Côte d'Azur, there is no seabord road and, to get to most of the beaches, one takes the route des Plages running from the village around to Ramatuelle. They are then accessed by narrow side lanes usually bordered by pine forest, wild flowers and vineyards.
The most well-known of these beach clubs are the mostly family oriented but cosmopolitan Club 55 and the luxury, highly decadent Voile Rouge with its near-naked serving staff: between these two extremes is a spectrum of eclectic venues suited to nearly every taste.
