France - Cote d'Azur

COTE D'AZUR

The Côte d'Azur with a legendary coastline, stunning scenery and wonderful ancient monuments needs little by way of introduction: it was "discovered" by Lord Brougham around 1834 on his way to Italy and, in spite of much development in some of the coastal areas, it has managed to retain its own special magic.

Blue skies and a shimmering sea with the faint scent of herbs in the air – olive trees, cypresses, maritime pine, brightly-coloured bougainvillea, orange, lemon, and fig trees dazzle the senses: There is nothing quite like it in the world. And there never will be.

The real Côte d'Azur, or French Riviera as it was often called by the English, begins near the Italian border at the lovely city of Menton and goes roughly south-west taking in the principality of Monaco, Cap d'Ail, and the small but elegant ports of Beaulieu and Villefranche on either side of the most stylish and sought after of all the peninsulas, Cap Ferrat with its charming little village; next is the bustling city of Nice with its world-famous, seafront Promenade des Anglais.

It continues to Antibes with its large pleasure-craft port walled old town, and the Cap d'Antibes peninsula, then passes through the elegant city of Cannes with its palm tree-lined, world-famous seafront road, la Croisette, and the Palais des Festival. The Côte d'Azur ends with the charming ports of la Napoule with its inland marina and Théoule with its long, sandy beach and ochre cliffs.
The Menton-Nice coast probably represents the French Riviera in its most nostalgic and legendary form: the mountains here, the Alpes-Maritimes, are very close to the sea, providing a natural barrier to any serious urban development. It was known as the "Pearl of France" in the nineteenth century, and has retained all of its beauty.

There are three main roads linking these two cities: the Basse Corniche right on the waterfront; the Moyenne Corniche a few hundred feet up above the sea; and the Grande Corniche almost in the clouds. The Moyenne Corniche offers the most spectacular views of the sea and the coastline, and it is considered to be one of the great drives – if not the greatest – in the world.
