CORSICA
Corsica was christened the Ile de la Beauté—the Island of Beauty—by the French, and it is considered by the cognoscenti to be the most beautiful of all the islands in the Mediterranean.
In fact, Corsica is so beautiful that, even after seeing all the idealized images in books, the sheer integrity of the landscape comes as a revelation, almost unbelievable.
Corsica is a land of very great diversity: high mountains run down most of the central part with Monte Cinto in the south-west reaching an awesome 8,900 feet; vast and primitive forests of pine, cork oak, chestnut and rather pungent Eucalyptus – some trees reach 130 feet – cover much of the island. They act as its "lungs" and really do ensure the purest of air; gentle, green pastoral valleys, exquisite mountain lakes, countless pristine rivers that dramatically cascade into waterfalls, and quite literally hundreds of hillside villages lost in time.
Between the forests and the sea – dotted with farms and vineyards – is the legendary maquis which perfumes the whole island: dense and exotic vegetation embracing an infinite variety of flora including wild olive trees, the Corsican rock-rose, violet and yellow gorse, arbousiers with their distinctive red and yellow, strawberry-like fruit, juniper trees, bilberry, Genévriers, myrtles, wild orchids, sweet-smelling herbs and wild flowers – a vast carpet of them covers the whole island in spring filling the air with a delightful perfume.
