Fine Wines

The Most Expensive - Not Always the Best

We can ship and have ready for your arrival examples of the best Bordeaux wines including Haut Brion, Lafitte Rothschild, Latour, Margaux, Mouton Rothschild and the inimitable Petrus, the finest Burgundy and, in Italy, good examples of the Super Tuscans such as the better Sassicaias, Ornellaias, and Solaias.

In the South of France and Corsica, however, we know from experience that many of our clients feel the climate, the cuisine, and atmosphere lend themselves more to the drinking of the lighter reds, whites, and the rosés.

Wines from the Bandol region in the Var—the vineyards are located near the lovely hilltop village of la Cadière d'Azur—are considered by wine lovers to be “serious” with reds, whites, and rosés elaborated using the quintessential Mediterranean Mourvèdre grape variety, offering notable finesse.

Domaine Tempier and Château Romassan are considered to be the aristocrats of the appelation; respected estates are Château la Rouvière, Moulin des Costes, and Château de Pibarnon.

Rosé wines and especially the white wines from around the tiny port of Cassis really are very good and nicely priced; the Nice area offers superb wines from the rather pricey Château Simone winery, Palette red being a good example; the best Corsican rosé wine is also outstanding.

Saint Tropez produces vast quantities of vin de table, but now it also has some very fine estates producing good red and white wines as well as really quite exceptional rosés: Château Volterra—reds and whites only—and Château de Barbeyrolles are excellent examples.

During summer, the limited production paler rosés - the petale rosés - are most attractive since they are often just shades away from being white: growers pay homage to the dictum “less is more”, and the paler the rosé, the higher the price.

For local wines, we require some advance notice with two to three weeks being the norm; however, emergency orders can sometimes be filled within days.

We look forward to complementing your holiday with a choice of wines that reflects your own personal taste and palette.
